Due to the shallow keel in comparison to modern Mableheads it is well suited to sailing at Setley and goes well in stronger winds. The boat has been re-rigged to carry lower aspect ratio sails than the extreme high aspect sails seen on most modern Marbleheads, which gives it a more balanced appearance. She was built by Vickers-Armstrong and launched in 1938. At the second battle of Narvik she had her bows blown off but survived to be rebuilt. Later she took part in both Arctic and Malta convoys. In these photos she is depicted as she appeared during this period,in her Western Approaches camouflage scheme and heavily weathered. The model is 1:72 scale is almost entirely scratch-built from original plans and was begun in 2017. She is powered by twin shafts and contains a small smoke unit. Oyster dredging is still restricted to sail or manual dredges, and although it is not a serious commercial fishery some oysters are still harvested. The working boats now are used for recreation and are raced vigorously during the summer – more information about classes and individual boats can be found on the Falmouth Working Boats Association facebook page and the St Mawes Sailing Club website. Mi ‘andsome sports a cheerful topsail in light weather. She is built using a Kingston Mouldings hull and is a development of KM’s sketch plans. She was completed in 1942 and the model (1:96 scale) depicts her as she was at the time of her first speed trials. After a period of escorting Arctic convoys, she was transferred to the Mediterranean and subsequently torpedoed fore and aft. After reconstruction in the USA lasting many months, she took part in the bombardment of German positions for the D Day landings and was again hit and damaged by one of the shore batteries. After a period in reserve she was scrapped in 1955. The model is scratch built from original builders plans, has four working shafts, and features a smoke unit as well as, from the Scalewarship company, gun controllers that allow for realistic rotation and elevation. The photos were taken on Setley Pond at the end of December 2019. [Other models of John Edwards] [other Warship Models]... Read more...
