HMS Whimbrel

The model is scratch built 1:72 scale; the hull plank on frame and from original ship builder plans. The  ship herself was one of the members of the escort groups that protected convoys and hunted UBoats. In fact she was the last surviving member of the Black Swan Class, and late in the 1940s she was transferred to the Egyptian Navy who kept her operational until into the 90s when it was hoped to return her to the UK as part of Liverpool’s Battle of the Atlantic Memorial. Sadly, for various reasons, this never happened, and I fear she may already have been scrapped? My model was supposed to have been timed to coincide with the return of the original ship.

The photos were taken at Setley Pond on Sunday May 3rd. I can describe the model as ‘award winning’ because she won Gold at the April 2026 Poole Vikings Show.
