  • About the ClubAbout the ClubApril 26, 2016  The Solent Radio Controlled Model Yacht Club has its sailing waters at Setley Pond (click for map) located in the New Forest just south of Brockenhurst. The pond is co-located with a Picnic Area and model boaters can park directly adjacent to the water. We share the pond with the New Forest ponies and cattle that come to drink, and the herons and cormorants who come to eat! Model Yacht sailing at Setley Pond dates back to 1972. The Sailing Section of the “Solent Radio Controlled Yacht Club” was founded in 1978 with the primary purpose of model yacht racing. The Scale Section was established in 1980 with an interest in all scale model boats, both motor and sail. Nowadays the two sections of the Club are run separately but in close collaboration. The Scale Section of the Club is known as the “Solent Radio Control Model Boat Club”. Note that the use of radio controlled boats, cars and aircraft (including drones) is not allowed in the New Forest without specific permission. The Club pays a fee to the Forestry Commission which allows us to use Setley Pond for model boating provided we adhere to agreed conditions. Sailing Section: The Model Yacht Racing Section of the club has the use of the lake on Saturdays and Tuesdays, and on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. We race International One Metre (IOM), 6 Metre, DF 95 and America’s Cup (AC) yachts. Information and Contact details for the Sailing Section are available on the Sailing Section pages of this web site. The Sailing Section is affiliated to the Model Yachting Association. Scale Section: The Scale Model Section (known as the Solent Radio Control Model Boat Club) meets on Thursday and Sunday mornings at about 0930am throughout the year (weather permitting) with the pond available for use throughout those days, and scale members are also able to use the pond from about 1300 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. A very friendly welcome is extended to all visitors. The models range from rowing boats to liners and from sailing dinghies to square rigged ships (but note that fast electric racing boats or IC boats are not allowed by the Forestry Commission Regulations). The Scale Section has a membership of over 120 modellers with new members joining all the time. Before the covid-19 pandemic we held annual exhibitions in the Highcliffe and Milford-on-Sea area, typically there were over 70 boats on display and each might raise several hundred pounds for various Club charities. Unfortunately these have been suspended due to Covid, but the club intends to re-establish local exhibitions in future. Our members have also displayed their models at other clubs and exhibitions. Anyone interested in starting the hobby or joining the club is welcome to come along to the lake on a club morning. To get in touch with the Scale Section please see our Contact page where you can obtain an application form. [...]
  • Find Setley PondFind Setley PondApril 28, 2016Car Park Location 50o47’27”N 1o34’16”W SZ 3017 9921 Nearby Postcode (NB nearby houses, NOT the pond!) SO41 8PS Directions: Setley Pond is located in the New Forest just west of the A337 Brockenhurst to Lymington Road. Driving south from Brockenhurst: having passed the Filly Inn (on the left), there is a garage offering a hand car wash service on the left hand side and immediately afterward a speed camera protects the right turn off the main road toward the pond (signposted “Burley”). Having turned off the main road: ignore the turning immediately left after the cattle grid which leads into Jealous Lane. Instead take the next left after that (maybe about 200m further on) onto a dirt track with a “Setley Pond” sign and a New Forest Car Park post. Driving north from Lymington: after you pass the Hobler Inn (on the right) take the next road to the left (signposted “Burley”). If you pass the speed camera and the hand car wash garage you have just missed the turn! Then see paragraph above. NB IC and Fast Electric boats are not allowed on Setley Pond; they are allowed at Stoney Cross pond. [...]

  • Legacy PagesLegacy PagesApril 29, 2016Please use the Left Side Menu to access pages from our original Web Site Introduction: The Legacy Pages give access to parts of the original SRCMBC and SRCMYC web sites which are not yet available in the new web site format. Eventually most, but not all, of the pages will be reformatted for the new (2016) SRCMYC/SRCMBC web site. Please accept our apologies if viewing the old pages causes problems! Web Site History: The Scale Section web site was first set up in 2008 with the address “srcmbc.org.uk” since “Solent Radio Control Model Boat Club” had become used to denote the scale section of the Club. A Sailing Section site was created in 2009 with the address “srcmyc.org.uk”. Many pages on the two sites showed the same content but with different headers and navigation menus. Back in 2008/2009 web sites had much less prominence than today. Many Club members had no access to the web. Those who did have access would be using a desktop computer most often connected to the web using a telephone modem and “dial up”. The original web sites were designed knowing that they would always be viewed on a computer screen. Adding contributions to the sites needed the ability to write “html” and “php” code and to transfer files by “ftp”. The 2016 SRCMYC/SRCMBC site: The new site is designed to be viewed on mobile phones and tablets (like the iPad) as well as by computer. It is powered by “WordPress”, a management system which allows Club members to contribute their own items to the Club’s web site without having to write computer code. During the 8 years that the original site existed a lot of content was added including sections “About Setley Pond”, the “History of the Club”, and “Hints and Tips”. These sections will be made available as “Legacy Pages” until they can be integrated onto the new web site. [...]
  • About the Sailing SectionAbout the Sailing SectionApril 30, 2016The Sailing Section uses Setley Pond for yacht racing on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10.00 to 13.00, weather permitting, throughout the year and is affiliated to the Model Yachting Association. The classes sailed are the International One Metre (IOM), the 6 Metre, America’s Cup (AC), and the DF95. IOM Class Raced on Tuesdays The International One Metre (IOM) class has been raced at Setley since the late 1980’s. In this class variations in design and construction are strictly controlled with the aim of allowing less expensive boats to remain competitive. 6 Metre A small fleet of 6m yachts raced at on Wednesdays In concept these large, graceful yachts are a scaled-down version of a full size 6 metre racing yacht. However the class rules are “open” allowing variations of design within a fixed “formula” for the dimensions. Typically the boats are around 1m waterline length with large overhangs. Displacement is around 12kg and, despite a relatively shallow 230mm (9 inches) draught, they carry around 0.7m2 sail. A small but growing fleet of 6m yachts is being established and raced at Setley. America’s Cup (“AC”) Replica Yachts Raced on Monday and Saturday mornings An out of the box kit but with alternative sail rigs allowed. DF 95 Raced on Friday mornings, the DF95 class is rapidly developing worldwide. It is a very reasonably priced, high performance, strict one-design model racing yacht and ideally suited to Setley.
